Is butter coffee or Bulletproof® coffee good for weight loss?
No, it's not. Sure, if you drink butter coffee or the so called Bulletproof® coffee instead of having breakfast you might lose some weight. But you'd likely lose even more weight with a breakfast consisting of only black coffee (or just a little milk), i.e. intermittent fasting.
Here's an article on the subject: Is drinking coffee with butter and oil the key to weight loss?
The main benefits of butter coffee are long-lasting satiety and energy, and possibly a feeling of mental clarity (due to ketones, and the caffeine). Why add butter and oil to your coffee?
The fat provides satiety and helps curb cravings. The amount of fat can be adjusted to your liking. It can be a good idea to start off with a small amount, lets say a teaspoon, of MCT oil and work your way up to a full tablespoon if you feel good doing so. Some people experience stomach problems if adding too much oil at once.
The fat together with the caffeine from the coffee will give you a boost of energy to start your day. If caffeine isn't your thing, go ahead and try it with decaf. It won't give you quite the same effect but you will still have a great-tasting and filling drink.
MCT oil can be ordered online, but if you don't want to use it or can't find it, try unflavored coconut oil instead.
Add flavor
Make this recipe your own by adding your favorite flavors to it. Add some unsweetened cocoa powder and you'll have a butter mocha. Or why not try some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. If you feel like adding sweetness to your coffee, check out our guide to keto sweeteners.
This recipe works with hot tea or even bone broth, too, so give it a try. Or if chocolate is your thing, try our keto hot chocolate... a very low-carb morning indulgence!

I use the above method for making bulletproof coffee, but I add stevia to the mix prior to turning on the blender.
Makes for the best bulletproof experience I've had. You won't need cream.
Hope that helps!
My version: 2 cups of the coffee flavor of your choice. (This morning I chose a fresh grind of Hawaiian hazelnut)
2 tbsp virgin coconut oil (chain fatty acids are maximized & complete in virgin oil vs refined)
1 tbsp butter (unsalted and preferably grass fed i.e. Kerry Gold)
1 tbsp heavy cream
1 or 2 tsp of Stevia granulated sweetener (optional)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Stick-mixer blend for 2 to 4 seconds
Holy Grass Fed Cow is this gooood!
This is an especially nice breakfast beverage to greatly blunt hunger during a 24 hour intermittent fast from dinner time to dinner time.
Tea is normally not a problem. :)
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp coconut oil
2 tbsp heavy cream
I'll also add 3 drops of stevia extract. You can stir until all is melted together, but I prefer to blend it in a blender or with a stick blender. Makes a cappuccino-ish consistency.
I usually only have pods or instant coffee at homs, is this the same effect?
Does this undermine fasting, especially the 11 hour benefit?
Many Thanks
1 Cup of this coffee will not undermine fasting. :)
It should be OK as long it's black coffee only.
Sadly or is the fortunately the coffee doesn't count so 21 hrs done so far.
Thanks Peter & co
Bullet proof coffee contains quite a few calories so technically you don't fast if you drink it. But on the other hand if you try to loose weight I don't think it's a big problem if you drink one cup of it on your fasting day.
Coconut oil can be both solid and liquid depending on temperature. :)
Replacing butter with coconut oil is OK.
1/3 c. coconut milk
2/3 c. filtered water
1.5 tbsp coconut oil
1.5 tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp cocoa
Warm in a saucepan over medium heat and mix with a hand blender until frothy!
You can cut the calories by using Lite Coconut Milk or just using water.
Since I haven't seen any in-depth articles on here about the health benefits of coconut oil, I figured I'd share this fascinating report by Dr. Rhonda Patrick which does just that: https://www.foundmyfitness.com/ebook/Coconut_Oil_Report.pdf
According to the report, in which Dr. Patrick cites numerous studies, coconut oil can increase energy & metabolism, decrease body fat, suppress appetite, prevent acne, and even boost brainpower, including memory in Alzheimer's patients!
All these findings have me super excited to make this coffee a staple of my diet, and frankly look for any excuse to fit coconut oil into my diet :)
