Is butter coffee or Bulletproof® coffee good for weight loss?

No, it's not. Sure, if you drink butter coffee or the so called Bulletproof® coffee instead of having breakfast you might lose some weight. But you'd likely lose even more weight with a breakfast consisting of only black coffee (or just a little milk), i.e. intermittent fasting.

Here's an article on the subject: Is drinking coffee with butter and oil the key to weight loss?

The main benefits of butter coffee are long-lasting satiety and energy, and possibly a feeling of mental clarity (due to ketones, and the caffeine). Why add butter and oil to your coffee?

The fat provides satiety and helps curb cravings. The amount of fat can be adjusted to your liking. It can be a good idea to start off with a small amount, lets say a teaspoon, of MCT oil and work your way up to a full tablespoon if you feel good doing so. Some people experience stomach problems if adding too much oil at once.

The fat together with the caffeine from the coffee will give you a boost of energy to start your day. If caffeine isn't your thing, go ahead and try it with decaf. It won't give you quite the same effect but you will still have a great-tasting and filling drink.

MCT oil can be ordered online, but if you don't want to use it or can't find it, try unflavored coconut oil instead.

Add flavor

Make this recipe your own by adding your favorite flavors to it. Add some unsweetened cocoa powder and you'll have a butter mocha. Or why not try some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. If you feel like adding sweetness to your coffee, check out our guide to keto sweeteners.

This recipe works with hot tea or even bone broth, too, so give it a try. Or if chocolate is your thing, try our keto hot chocolate... a very low-carb morning indulgence!

Can I use cream and some stevia in my bulletproof coffee?
  2. Jeremy
    Martha,

I use the above method for making bulletproof coffee, but I add stevia to the mix prior to turning on the blender.

Makes for the best bulletproof experience I've had. You won't need cream.

    Hope that helps!

I have been using a mutated version of the Dave Asprey originator of "Bullet Proof" coffee using very expensive microtoxin-free specialty coffee and his equally expensive Brain Octane chain fatty acids formulation.
My version: 2 cups of the coffee flavor of your choice. (This morning I chose a fresh grind of Hawaiian hazelnut)
2 tbsp virgin coconut oil (chain fatty acids are maximized & complete in virgin oil vs refined)
1 tbsp butter (unsalted and preferably grass fed i.e. Kerry Gold)
    1 tbsp heavy cream
1 or 2 tsp of Stevia granulated sweetener (optional)
    1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
    Stick-mixer blend for 2 to 4 seconds

Holy Grass Fed Cow is this gooood!
This is an especially nice breakfast beverage to greatly blunt hunger during a 24 hour intermittent fast from dinner time to dinner time.

Nearly the same, but 2 tbsp heavy cream instead of butter, and tsp of cinamon! Keeps me going from 7am until about 2 or 3pm everyday!

Can i use salted butter if thats all I have or will it be yuck??
  6. Michelle
Rach, salt will tone down coffee which can be bitter, so you will not notice it.

I usually have coconut milk instead of normal milk in my coffee, just to make it a bit easier to induce ketosis - do you think this would be a problem at all?

The recipe I use for one cup of coffee:

    2 tbsp butter
    1 tbsp coconut oil
    2 tbsp heavy cream

I'll also add 3 drops of stevia extract. You can stir until all is melted together, but I prefer to blend it in a blender or with a stick blender. Makes a cappuccino-ish consistency.

    Hi Melanie!

1 Cup of this coffee will not undermine fasting. :)

    Hi Cynthia!

It should be OK as long it's black coffee only.

Excellent reply, just what I wanted to read, in the midst of my day 1 miasma, did my coffee undermine it all, therefore can I eat!
Sadly or is the fortunately the coffee doesn't count so 21 hrs done so far.

    Thanks Peter & co

I read online bulletproof coffee raises the bad small dense cholesterol and Dr Eric Westman mentioned it can stall weight gain and even increase weight. How many cups do you guys drink 1 or 2?
  19. Eliza
I LOVE this coffee - I did 1 cup black coffee with 1 T of each coconut oil & butter (made from the cream from our organic milk cows). Will it stall weight loss to double this in the morning? Thanks
  20. Rose
I don't use unsalted butter. I add salt to my coffee anyways to make it alkaline and not acidic so using salted butter isn't a big deal for me. Even adding the cream to it afterwards will keep it alkaline if salt was added to coffee.
  21. Sandra
I make mine with coconut oil, butter plus I add cayenne peeper, cinnamon & tumeric. Gives the coffe a real ouch, very warming and keeps me going nearly all day before I feel hungry. I swear by it.

Just to clarify... Am I correct in thinking that the bullet proof coffe Is ok for breakfast on a fast day?

    Hi Jen!

Bullet proof coffee contains quite a few calories so technically you don't fast if you drink it. But on the other hand if you try to loose weight I don't think it's a big problem if you drink one cup of it on your fasting day.

Just to clarify... Am I correct in thinking that the bullet proof coffe Is ok for breakfast on a fast day?

  26. Michael
You can eat a meal as well, but I, and many others only drink a cup of this and feel satisfied for several hours.

Is this meant to be the only thing you drink at breakfast or can you have a meal as well? Many thanks

It's my daily breakfast. I absolutely love it. My husband is a convert too. He was having problems with his memory. So he put coconut oil in his coffee and now there is no problem. Now we both have this first thing and eat one low carb meal in the evening. Never felt better.

I used a keto calculator to determine that my daily caloric intake to lose weight is around 1830 calories. When looking at the recipes I see the macro nutrient percentage breakdown but not the calories per serving. Is this information available with the recipes? Thank you!

My husband and I are starting this today. I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I am lactose intolerant. The mere thought of heavy cream makes me hurt. Can I replace it with something else in the recipes and still get the desired effect? TIA

This is way more delicious than I thought it would be. Way.

Can't get coconut oil. Can I use anything else?
  34. Nikki
Can someone please answer for me is it safe to use this Bulletproof Coffee more than once a day, as a sort of meal replacement? I've been having one in the morning, a very late meal, maybe about 4pm, that's how long it takes for any kind of hunger to return. Then sometimes quite late, maybe about 9 or 10pm I feel a bit hungry again, but don't feel like actual food, so sometimes I will just have another of this coffee instead, since it fills me up so much. I use decaffeinated coffee only, regular makes me shaky. Is it safe to replace meals with the coffee in this way?

I would think you're missing out on some vitamins. I would at least eat one keto balanced meal a day. Even try taking some vitamins with it.

Hi all....odd question, but what is the benefit of putting this in a blender? I'd love to try it but I'm the only one up early in the morning and am pretty confident others would not appreciate me turning the blender on.

I tried Bulletproof Coffee for awhile but I really prefer my coffee black and it was sort of ruining the experience for me. So, I came up with Bulletproof Cocoa instead and I either have it after my morning coffee or as a nightcap before bed. The cocoa helps up the minerals in my diet as well.
    1/3 c. coconut milk
    2/3 c. filtered water
    1.5 tbsp coconut oil
    1.5 tbsp unsalted butter
    1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
    2 tbsp cocoa
Warm in a saucepan over medium heat and mix with a hand blender until frothy!
You can cut the calories by using Lite Coconut Milk or just using water.
  44. RRWalker
It makes it creamy instead of greasy.

Morning! I have been having "Bulletproof coffee" daily, but since I like my coffee so much, I make 2 cups (16 oz each) still using the 1 TBSP of coconut oil, butter (and sometimes a little cream!) and vanilla and stevia. That way I can have the same macros...just space it out a little longer! So one in the morning, and the other around 11:00 am. I'm good until at least dinner. Many time I follow this with a 42 hour fast - dinner one night, nothing except my coffee and lemon water the next day, and then lunch and dinner the following day. Amazing results. I AM NOT HUNGRY AT ALL following this 'diet' (hate that word: it's a lifestyle!!)

    Hi guys,

Since I haven't seen any in-depth articles on here about the health benefits of coconut oil, I figured I'd share this fascinating report by Dr. Rhonda Patrick which does just that: https://www.foundmyfitness.com/ebook/Coconut_Oil_Report.pdf

According to the report, in which Dr. Patrick cites numerous studies, coconut oil can increase energy & metabolism, decrease body fat, suppress appetite, prevent acne, and even boost brainpower, including memory in Alzheimer's patients!

All these findings have me super excited to make this coffee a staple of my diet, and frankly look for any excuse to fit coconut oil into my diet :)

  47. Nancy
Hi Nancy, I've heard coconut oil can do that so maybe try it with less oil. I also get that result from Stevia. If you used that in the coffee it could be the culprit. Hope you got it sorted out by now.
  48. Melissa
What is the best sweeter out there? I bought stevia organic packets, but it's very bitter, then I bought the regular stevia packets, they are not as bitter, but 2 carbs per packet!! The bullet proof coffee is quite good I think. I use tab Coconut oil, 1 tab butter, 2 tab h&h, 2 stevia, and 2 tsp sugar-free Carmel flavoring or 1/2 tsp vanilla, I will admit once in a while I will use extra creamy redi whip on top of the drink.. It's sooo good.
  49. Brenda
For people experiencing stomche issues after drinking the bullet proof coffee I would suggest researching 'fat malabsorption' and ways to improve gall bladder function.

Hello there, I have not yet started but I am hoping to begin a Ketogenic diet. While looking through the recipes I have come to notice that the fat percentage for all recipes are very high. As I was completing research for this diet I came to find that you should have 70% fat plus. With combining recipes (as I would be prepareing all meals before hand) I am finding that I would be way over the 70+. Would I still be okay to combine recipes, and not worry about the fat percentage?
