Instructions

  1. Shred the cabbage finely using a sharp knife or a food processor.
  2. Fry the cabbage in half of the butter in a large frying or wok pan on medium-high heat. It takes a while for the cabbage to soften, but don't let it turn brown.
  3. Add spices and vinegar. Stir and fry for a couple of minutes more. Put the cabbage in a bowl.
  4. Melt the rest of the butter in the same frying pan. Add garlic, chili flakes and ginger. Sauté for a few minutes.
  5. Add ground meat and brown until the meat is thoroughly cooked and most of the juices have evaporated. Lower the heat a little.
  6. Add scallions and cabbage to the meat. Stir until everything is hot. Salt and pepper to taste. Drizzle with sesame oil before serving.
  7. Mix together the wasabi mayonnaise by starting with a small amount of wasabi and adding more until the flavor is just right. Serve the stir-fry warm with a dollop of wasabi mayonnaise on top.

Substituting ingredients

Want variety? You can replace the beef with other kinds of protein like ground chicken, pork or lamb. If you have other sorts of cabbage like red cabbage or savoy cabbage, they will work just as fine.

If you don't like mayonnaise you can substitute that for crème fraîche, sour cream, or even cream cheese.

Storing and reheating

This dish keeps in the fridge for at least 3-4 days. You can also store it in the freezer for up to 4 months.

Thawing and reheating can make the cabbage release its liquids so the dish may be a bit more watery compared to freshly cooked. This does not affect the flavor of the dish.

    Hi Kate!

Just above the ingredient list, choose 1 serving in drop down menu.

Red help. Am a single senior (71) diabetic, on a limited income, very limited! I would have a lot of leftovers and the nutrient quality would be diminished. Are there any recipes for ONE?

You are correct. No need to count calories just carbs. I have been back on Keto for 5 weeks and have lost 20 lbs already. Tried Keto in July 2016 till January 2017 lost 53 lbs then slacked off for another year but only gained 25 back. If you follow the guidelines you will succeed

The nutrition info includes the Wasabi mayonnaise?

I majorly messed up this recipe and not entirely sure why. I think I was cooking with too much butter. For some reason, the recommended amount of butter to use in Step 2 (2–3 ounces (60–90 g)) never changes based on how many services you're trying to cook for. I would appreciate it if this was corrected so that I could try this recipe again. Thanks!

I’m cooking up the Asian cabbage slaw now. Using large head of cabbage and wondering if that’s more than 25 ounces so I should double spices and vinegar? Thoughts please.

you've made recommendations that completely go against how to eat keto - are you sure you're doing following the keto diet?

Delicious and an excellent dish to take to work. Thank you.

This was amazing! I made it last night as our first keto meal. We were super impressed but the taste and how full we were afterwards. This is definitely staying in our rotation of meals! My husband asked me to please make it again soon!!

Wasn't feeling like an Asian dish so I made this using pork sausage with fennel. Added all the other spices to the meat as it cooked. (Left out the ginger and sesame oil.) It was pretty oil-laden with all that butter so left out the mayo dollop (which I would have changed to garlic mayo for this version). It was tasty. Next time would add more cabbage. I wouldn't hesitate to freeze it.

Made this with hot Italian sausage that was carb free. Skipped the chili powder and butter and added a few mushrooms. It was amazing!
  17. Lucca
I used red wine vinegar, made no difference.

Found it didn't really need the mayo. Of course I used hot Italian sausage, so it was spicy and very delicious.

I keep kosher and cannot mix dairy and meat together. What should I substitute all the butter with when the meal contains meat?

This was amazing! One of the most uniquely tasting dishes I’ve ever made! I made it with steak strips but will try ground beef next time. I also didn’t put as much mayo as the recipe called for to limit carbs/canola oil.

I am a little confused. Do you want two servings, one for lunch and one for dinner if you are single or just one split.

I can't get wasabi paste at my local supermarket, so would garlic mayo be ok?
  25. Heather
I was worried after reading some of the negative reviews...but OMG this is SOOOOOOO delicious!!!!!!!
  26. Sam
Is the fat grams correct?? 93g?? I'm assuming that is with the wasabi mayo, which I didn't use, but my macros state I should stay at 93g total for the day! I'm so confused... Help!!
  27. Lynn
Made this today and it is delicious.
  28. Cheryl
It was okay, I'll make it again... but man the wasabi mayo is awesome!

Thumbs up! I had leftover sirloin strip steak that I cut into pieces and cooked the recipe as instructed. I added some soy on top just before I ate mine to get my extra salt intake needed for just starting a Keto Diet. This recipe was so quick, easy and delicious. No leftovers. The entire family devoured it. I know I will have some leftover rotisserie chicken coming up that is being used in a different recipe and I'm just going to whip it up into this afterward. Yum!

To get enough for dinner and lunch do i just set to 2 people and make that? When printed for 1 person the recipe says 1 + 1 servings dinner and lunch so I'm slightly confused about how much to make.
  32. Nadia
I followed the recipe for two people and did not add more butter.
To buttery for me. I don’t know what will make it better so unfortunately have to eat the remainder for lunch .
  33. Shonya
I would try horseradish mayo if you can’t find wasabi.
  34. DavidT
Just cooked this tonight and it came out really greasy on my plate, but maybe that's the idea. This high fat diet probably suggests drinking the grease (fat) off the plate too. LOL

I am not a cabbage lover, but O-M-G!! This stir fry is SO unbelievably good. I can’t wait to have lunch now... I definitely want to try this ground chicken and pork. Oh, that mayo dressing is a great touch. I HATE wasabi so I left that out, but I added some mayo to the stir while I was heating it up and it was fantastic!!
  36. Jane
Very good!! The whole family loved it!
  37. Doris
I love cabbage so this recipe is just right for me. I like the idea of making it with strips of steak and will try that next time. Seems to be a lot of food for two servings.

1000+ calories per serve is alot this cant be correct can it?
  39. Karen
Way too much butter for this amount of cabbage. Making 2 servings, I started out with 1 ounce of butter and then added 1/2 ounce more while it was cooking. This was plenty for the 2 serving recipe. I could not add the sesame oil at the end as everything would have been a puddle of grease. But I did use a flavored mayo (ginger and garlic since I don't care for wasabi) and that was good.
  40. Kim
Not very good. Bland. May be better with chicken.

how much is a serving? how many cups? this is so good it is hard to stop eating
  42. Georgina
I would like to know this as well...

Maybe more appealing once you are used to so much fat. My minced beef was fatty too. I added wasabi paste since there was no way I could face more fat even though I halved the butter. It needed colour too. Not for me.
