Is butter coffee or Bulletproof® coffee good for weight loss?

No, it's not. Sure, if you drink butter coffee or the so called Bulletproof® coffee instead of having breakfast you might lose some weight. But you'd likely lose even more weight with a breakfast consisting of only black coffee (or just a little milk), i.e. intermittent fasting.

Here's an article on the subject: Is drinking coffee with butter and oil the key to weight loss?

The main benefits of butter coffee are long-lasting satiety and energy, and possibly a feeling of mental clarity (due to ketones, and the caffeine). Why add butter and oil to your coffee?

The fat provides satiety and helps curb cravings. The amount of fat can be adjusted to your liking. It can be a good idea to start off with a small amount, lets say a teaspoon, of MCT oil and work your way up to a full tablespoon if you feel good doing so. Some people experience stomach problems if adding too much oil at once.

The fat together with the caffeine from the coffee will give you a boost of energy to start your day. If caffeine isn't your thing, go ahead and try it with decaf. It won't give you quite the same effect but you will still have a great-tasting and filling drink.

MCT oil can be ordered online, but if you don't want to use it or can't find it, try unflavored coconut oil instead.

Add flavor

Make this recipe your own by adding your favorite flavors to it. Add some unsweetened cocoa powder and you'll have a butter mocha. Or why not try some cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. If you feel like adding sweetness to your coffee, check out our guide to keto sweeteners.

This recipe works with hot tea or even bone broth, too, so give it a try. Or if chocolate is your thing, try our keto hot chocolate... a very low-carb morning indulgence!

I was skeptical when making this for breakfast this morning but this is easily one of the tastiest home made coffees I have ever had.

Hi I'm new to LCHF and tried this coffee first time this morning. Much nicer than expected!!
I'm tracking my foods in My Fitness Pal and when I import this recipe it reflects 100% fat and 0% carbs or protein.
Where are the 2% carbs as shown in the nutrient breakdown for the recipe? I can't say it's 'only' 2 carbs as that's a lot when I'm aming for a daily max of 22-25!! Thanks!

Hi there I've been doing the hflc for 3 weeks now, week 1 was an amazing weight loss 9lb ? Week 2 2lb week 3 no loss, I'm around 99kg 15st 8lb so I know I should be loosing more than 2lb and definitely not anything, week 1 I didn't have any bullet proof coffee but the last 2 weeks I have had almost daily and I am becoming reliant on it for energy, I don't eat 3 meals a day I do however eat well (I think) I actually eat more now than before I started this I have learn d to use portion control though and eating slower as I'm always in a rush to get on to my next job, I'm getting rather upset that all my hard work isn't paying off on the scales despite cooking delicious meals for hours on end to keep prepared, can anyone give me some advice on why the weight is not shifting now ?
P.s tomorrow I starting the 2 week keto challenge ?

Could I make this in a shaker like you have for protein shakes? To give it the oomph but at work?

Charlotte, I use a battery-powered milk frother to make my coffee. Works great, and super portable!

do you have to blend it? or can you stir it?

I stir mine and it's fine (I mean I like it that way). I also prepare butter and coconut oil in 1 TBSP portions and store in my refrigerator to save me a little time. I turn on the coffee, put one of each and in a cup, and do other things while waiting for the coffee to brew. When done in the right proportions, this is very tasty!

I am new in just looking into keto diet for adrenal fatigue. But I'm pretty shocked that the recipe asks for 1 tablespoon of salt. I already use pink salt. But I don't know if I would enjoy this much number 1 and number 2 I'm on high blood pressure pills. I've been told to reduce salt? Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Hi Monica!

It should be OK ... as long as it's non-sweetened. :)

Can I replace black coffee whit instant coffee?

I am new to this bullet proof coffee and was wondering if 16ozs of this in the morning (following the recipe) will be alright to drink without eating anything in the morning. Thanks in advance.

Much nicer with a big dollop of full cream!
  21. David
I blend mine for a few seconds in nutribullet (with full cream).

    Most of us can. :)

Can I drink the bullet coffee daily?

Hello, I am new to this program. Still have to do a lot of studying about the keto low carb diet, but it's not too bad. My main question is, how much meat do we eat for a meal? Are we allowed to have 2nd of meat and vegetables if still hungry? Today I wasn't able to eat lunch so I was extra hungry. Most generally won't do 2nds in the meantime with this diet.

How many cups of bullet proof coffee can one drink a day?
  28. Sharon
I've been doing keto for two weeks ..... haven't lost an ounce! Bulletproof coffee for breakfast... eggs and salad with hidden valley ranch for lunch .... some type of meat cooked in butter or coconut oil with salad or low carb veggie for dinner....
Also I haven't had sugar, white foods (flour, potatoes, rice, pasta, etc) for months, no soda for months , no breads, etc. for months. VERY discouraged!

Sharon, can you be more specific with what types of vegetables you're eating?

Also, I think Hidden Valley dressing has sugar.

Can i drink this while fasting?

  31. lisa
So the bulletproof coffee is al you have for breakfast.?
  32. Russell
no it contains a heap of calories.... when fasting you have to limit yourself to 50 calories or less....
  33. Russell
the best recommendation i could give you is to only weigh yourself once a month.... there are so many factors in bodily weight daily, like fluctuating water weight, etc.... the best measurement to keep track of is your waist measurement in my opinion....
  34. Kaye
    To Russell re #82
Did you mean 50 calories or 50 grams of carbs. First time I have heard of a 50 calorie limit while fasting. I thought no calories while fasting. ???
  35. gjeanieg
Kaye, many people (even in this DD thread) say that you will not break your fast with a beverage of less than 50 calories. That is what Russell meant, I believe.
  36. gjeanieg
But I must add, that this bullet proof coffee is well over 50 calories! :)
  37. Audrey
It's"0" carbs. Fats have no carbs so enjoy!
  38. Audrey
You are allowed 20 carbs and 60 grams of protein each day. If you stay within those guidelines you will lose weight. I just completed 2 weeks and lost 9 pounds

Oh my gosh! My new favorite thing! I use 1 Tbsp butter, 1 tbsp coconut oil, bit of vanilla extract, 1 tbspn Heavy Whipping cream. I put it in my nutribullet and let it blast a bit then it's time for YUMMY YUMMY! I love it!! I had it twice today (with decaf the 2nd time)
  40. James
Yes! Unrefined has that coconut flavor. Your preference beyond that. I like the flavor it adds.
  41. James
Great coffee. 2 cups and you don't need breakfast (hunger is gone)...helps you achieve intermittent fasting.
I've been doing the bulletproof coffee for about a year now.
I like to add cashew milk (unsweetened of course) and Stevia liquid drops (easy to find at the healthy food markets...Sprouts has multiple flavors).
  42. Sue
    Hi Kia,
my reply is a little late, but I had my gallbladder removed back in 2003 and I have absolutely no problems at all eating the fattiest stuff. It's the carby stuff only that doesn't agree with me...
  43. Susanna
Why is this in the dairy free section? It has butter in....
  44. Sarah
Can you use an alternative to coconut oil?

Awesome option I'm all about saving time thanks for the share

I was looking for an alternate to coconut oil as well. Both MCT oil and coconut oil make my heart palpatate. Cacao butter (not cocoa) seems to be a good substitute and has some good benefits. Caffeine, coconut oil and grass-fed butter all have thermogenics properties which make this a potent drink, especially if you have high blood pressure or thyroid issues. I loved the energy it gave me, but the heart palpatatations almost sent me to the ER.
  48. Kim
    Can I add stevia?
  49. Chris
I have been having the same problem. I am 67 and can't exercise much due to a very bad back. I do mow grass and walk when I can. I was on 600 calories for a month; nothing. Atkins long time; nothing. I am trying this now but week 1 and nothing. I used to be able to keep my weight down but something has changed. I went to a nutritionist and a diet dr; nothing. Of course the diet Dr quit after the first month and I had to abruptly stop my hormones so who knows? I have tried several diets over the last 3 years and just keep gaining. I don't get it.

Marilu, Of course if you use cacao powder that's unsweetened. I use 2tsps. in 16oz. of coffee. In addition to ghee and MCT oil, I also put in 7 drops of liquid stevia and a tbsp of heavy whipping cream. Sometimes a bit of cinnamon and/or a splash of vanilla extract.
